Creamy Atlantic Lobster Chowder Recipe | Easy Homemade Chowder

Ingredients

  • For the Chowder
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely diced
  • 2 celery stalks, finely diced
  • 2 medium carrots, peeled and diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups seafood stock or chicken broth
  • 2 cups Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and diced small
  • 1 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • For the Lobster
  • 454 g (1 pound) cooked Atlantic lobster meat, chopped into bite-sized pieces
  • To Finish
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chives, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • Optional Garnish
  • Extra lobster meat
  • Fresh chives
  • Cracked black pepper
  • Lemon wedges
  • Oyster crackers or crusty bread

Instructions

    Step 1: Sauté the Vegetables

    In a large Dutch oven or soup pot, melt the butter with the olive oil over medium heat.

    Add:

  • Onion
  • Celery
  • Carrots

Cook for 5 to 7 minutes until softened.

Add the garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.

Step 2: Create the Chowder Base

Sprinkle the flour over the vegetables.

Stir continuously for 1 minute.

Slowly pour in the seafood stock while whisking to prevent lumps.

Add:

  • Potatoes
  • Old Bay seasoning
  • Onion powder
  • Thyme
  • Bay leaf

Bring to a gentle boil.

Reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork tender.

Step 3: Add the Lobster

Stir in the lobster meat.

Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until heated through.

Avoid overcooking the lobster to keep it tender.

Step 4: Finish with Cream and Lemon

Reduce heat to low.

Stir in:

  • Heavy cream
  • Lemon juice
  • Lemon zest

Simmer gently for 2 to 3 minutes.

Do not boil after adding the cream.

Remove the bay leaf.

Taste and season with salt and pepper as needed.

Step 5: Garnish and Serve

Ladle into bowls.

Top with:

  • Fresh chives
  • Fresh parsley
  • Additional lobster meat
  • Fresh cracked pepper

Serve with warm crusty bread or oyster crackers.
