Bannock Bread History

According to Metistreats.com

Bannock is a type of fry bread, which originates from Scotland but was eventually adopted by the Indigenous peoples of Canada, particularly the Métis of Western Canada. Bannock stems from the Gaelic word bannach, which means “morsel,” a short and sweet but accurate description.

BANNOCK MEANING

Bannock is bread, which originates from Scotland but came to the Indigenous peoples of Canada via the fur traders/trappers. Bannock stems from the Gaelic word bannach, which means “morsel.

ARE BANNOCK AND FRIED BREAD THE SAME

Yes, and this is a staple amongst the Indigenous peoples across North America. You can make the bread in a large batch and serve it like that or make small pieces as I have in this recipe below.

Also, you can make it more dense by adding less water if desired.

WHO INVENTED BANNOCK

According to the Canadian Encyclopedia this bread came from the Scottish who migrated to North America as fur traders known as the Selkirk settlers, who in turn introduced Bannock to the Indigenous peoples. Today, Bannock is mostly associated with Indigenous peoples of Canada.

Yes, just be sure it has cooled down before placing into an airtight sealed Ziplock bag.

CAN BANNOCK BE BAKED
