This Recette Pate Chinois is super simple pie recipe that is allot like a Shepperd’s pie and contains less than a few simple ingredients.

Has lean ground hamburger, potatoes, cream corn and some seasonings in it.

WHY DO THEY CALL IT PATE CHINOIS

And the answer to that is found online and that is that Chinese people who helped build the railroads in the early 1700 also had a part in creating this dish which in English translates to Chinese Pie.

It is actually a French Canadian classic dish that originates out Quebec and has both French and Acadian origins.

WHAT’S PATE CHINOIS

It is a French Canadian dish that origins come from Quebec and it is a pie that is simply made of ground beef, creamed corn and mashed potatoes on top.

Pate Chinois VS Shepperd’s Pie

Pate Chinois is made with ground beef and creamed corn where Shepheard’s Pie has just lamb and potatoes. 

HOW TO MAKE PATE CHINOIS

HOW TO MAKE PATE CHINOIS

  • Start by peeling 5 large potatoes, rinse and dice them then put them into a large pot of boiling water and cook till soft.
  • Strain the potatoes and toss back into the pot with some cream and butter, season with salt and mash till soft and creamy.
  • Meanwhile, in a large pan sauté a large diced onion till soft in 2 tbsp of butter. Remove the onions and set aside.
  • Then add in some lean ground hamburger and season with ground cloves, pepper and salt.
  • Cook the hamburger till browned then add back in the onions and toss to combine.
  • Next, layer the ground beef onion mixture into a baking dish, top with a can of creamed corn
  • Then lastly the mashed potatoes
  • Bake at 350 for 30 minutes and the remaining 3 mins broil it so that the potatoes become more browned.
  • Serve with fresh parsley and ketchup if desired.
