This Hand Roll Sushi (Temaki Sushi) is super easy to make and is excellent for dipping into a your favorite soya sauce.
I made mine today with sliced crab sticks, sliced cucumber and carrots. Then the sauce you see in it is simply a mixture of mayonnaise and siracha sauce. You can put shrimp or salmon in it in replace of the crab sticks, totally up to you.
WHAT IS HAND ROLL SUSHI
It Japanese it is actually called a “Temaki roll” which means “hand roll sushi” and it is made with either half or a large roll of nori “roasted seaweed” the same shell that is used for rolling sushi. However with the handmade toll, instead of slicing it into 6 to 8 pieces your simply rolling it up into a cone shape where you can eat it with your hands vs chopsticks!
It is fair to say, I’m obsessed with Sushi. It is one of my favorite Japanese foods, next to there homemade ramen soups. I used to go out at least once per month for sushi, and typically spent anywhere from 60 to 150 dollars on a dinner for 2. I have since stopped that addiction and have learned to make it all at home myself.
There is so many gadgets to making sushi at home, however you really only need your hands when it comes to making sushi. And well of course the basic tools
TOOLS TO MAKE SUSHI
- Saran wrap
- Sushi bamboo rolling mat
- Sushi knife
ROLL VS HAND ROLL SUSHI
- A sushi roll is called Maki and consists of cylinders that are sliced into typically 6 to 8 pieces.
- A Hand roll is called a Temaki and is cone shaped and served just for one.
HOW TO EAT HAND ROLL SUSHI
You simply pick it up with your hands and put it into your mouth 🙂 if you want soya sauce on it, simply drizzle it into the top of the roll.
HOW TO MAKE HAND ROLL SUSHI
Simply fill the Nori (seaweed sheet) at the bottom as seen in the picture below and fill it with your pre-made sushi rice, sliced crab sticks, cucumber and carrots. Roll up from the side into a cone like shaped roll and enjoy!
